The European Medicines Agency stated that its scientific committee issued positive opinions for six generic versions of sanofi-aventis’ and Bristol-Myers Squibb’s Plavix (clopidogrel). The recommendations were given to products filed by Teva, Acino and Pharmathen.

Acino, which has sold a generic version of the antiplatelet agent in Germany since 2008, received positive opinions for four of the versions, while Teva and Pharmathen received a recommendation for one version each.
A spokesman for sanofi-aventis said the drugmaker and its partner Bristol-Myers Squibb “will continue to defend their property rights everywhere they can.” He remarked that the patent on Plavix is valid until 2013 in countries that account for most of the product’s European sales.
