Astellas’ Prograf approved for ulcerative colitis in Japan

Japanese regulators granted Astellas expanded approval to sell Prograf (tacrolimus) as a treatment for moderate-to-severe refractory ulcerative colitis, the drugmaker announced on Tuesday.

The immunosuppressant drug is already approved in the country for organ and bone marrow transplantation and to treat rheumatoid arthritis, lupus nephritis and system myasthaenia gravis. Global sales of Prograf were 201 billion yen ($2.1 billion) in the fiscal year ended March 31, 2009.
