Sanofi-aventis and Exelixis reported that sanofi-aventis obtained an exclusive global licence to early-stage oncology compounds XL147 and XL765, and that the two companies will collaborate on the discovery of phosphoinositide-3 kinase (PI3K) inhibitors to treat solid tumours.

Medivation reported Thursday that it would offer 2.75 million common shares for $21 each and use the net proceeds for “general corporate purposes.” Assuming the offer’s underwriters exercise options for additional stock, the sale could raise up to $66.4 million.

Low-dose aspirin should not routinely be used to prevent heart attacks and strokes, contrary to official guidance, say UK researchers.
Analysis of data from over 100,000 clinical trial participants found the risk of harm largely cancelled out the benefits of taking the drug.

Data from the American Cancer Society’s annual cancer statistics report showed that from 1990 to 2005, death rates from cancer in the US dropped by 19.2 percent in men and 11.4 percent in women. The ACS attributed the changes to improved treatments as well as better prevention and detection practices.
